Sending an Updated Golden Record into Space
As of the 2026 State of the Union, our world's most pressing issues consisted of immigration enforcement/border security, the U.S economy, and health care/other costs. In 1977, life on earth seemed to be focused on encapsulating the progression of America, and the development of its current people. Modern highway images, the progression of medicine, and mathematical findings were just a few of the images used on the Golden Record. If a similar record were sent today, it would need to show how much life on earth has changed since that 1977 record. This record would need more than images of our accomplishments; it should highlight our current culture, technology, communication, and even problems we face. Today, communicating life on earth through images, songs, and pieces of work, would likely present a more complicated picture than the images shown in 1977. Not insisting that we haven’t progressed, as there are vast examples of our representation and pride on earth. However, if we were creating a Golden record in 2026, we could not ignore the reality of what life on earth currently looks like.
As any presidential administration would, issues and events arise constantly, with various updates. However, the 2026 Trump Administration has produced an especially constant stream of major events, with multiple stories making headlines each day. An image of President Trump would be included to represent modern politics and how governments and leaders influence and change the lives of millions of people. It would additionally show that humans have developed complex systems for governing themselves, while also showing the divisions that can exist within society.
Language being a key part of the way our world communicates, whether that's via music, conversation starting, or pieces of literature; it is quite literally our entire basis of understanding each other. In addition, I believe the rise of “slang” entering everyday vocabulary for many would be important to include, as shortened words or phrases aren't understood or used by everyone, though they still have their ways of meaning. Recordings of different languages and phrases being communicated would demonstrate both our similarities and cultural differences.
Including photos and/or videos of modern technology and architecture would most likely be included, as it demonstrates how humans have transformed their environment through science, technology, and engineering. In addition, it shows how advanced human civilization has become since the original Golden Record was created.
Connected to modern technology, I would be sure to include an image representing social media and modern communication. Platforms like social media have become a major part of how humans share information, express themselves, and connect with people across the world, resulting in both positives and negatives. Including this would show how communication on earth has evolved from the technology available in 1977, and how connected humans have become.
I would additionally include an image or recording of a major sporting event, like the Olympics, the Super Bowl, or March Madness; specifically an event that thousands of people indulge in. This overall represents the role that sports play in human culture. Sports bring people together through competition, entertainment, and national or community pride. An image or a large stadium filled with people would help understand how humans gather together and create shared experiences.
Although humanity has changed significantly since 1977, many of the things that define us have remained the same. We continue to communicate through language, express ourselves through music, create communities, develop technology, and agree and disagree over how society should be organized. These examples would give another life form a more complete understanding of who humans are.
